[edit] Free license
Question: is is not illegal to copy over WP contents here as at Quiverfull, since the GDFL and CC-nc-sa are incompatible? 72.153.12.186 01:29, 13 February 2007 (EST)
I doubt it. Wikipedia articles are posted here under the GFDL, our original entries are under the CC-nc-sa. The inclusion of our own licensing scheme for our own entries does not negate the permission Wikipedia gives everyone to copy and use their articles. We jst have to be more careful about putting the from-wikipedia tag up so people know which license applies, and perhaps put a disclaimer in our own cc statement that it does not apply to those covered by the GFDL. -141.154.231.52 19:28, 13 February 2007 (EST)
It isn't illegal to copy them. It is illegal to copy without attribution or to claim an exclusive copyright on them for ourselves.
If we crosspost page text here from WP, in modified or unmodified form, that page must remain GFDL as Wikipedia uses the GNU Free Documentation License. We are required to disclose and attribute this (which the {{from-wikipedia}} tag already does) and any modified versions of that specific page remain GFDL. That doesn't force GFDL to be selected for other content - only for the pages that are derivative works of existing GFDL content.
Whether GFDL is a better or worse choice for new pages, compared to other free-content licenses? That's a matter of opinion. The one advantage to tagging new pages as GFDL is that the content could be freely reused in GFDL projects such as Wikipedia. The downside is that anyone would be free to take any of the texts and publish them commercially without obtaining any further permissions from the authors. --66.102.66.73 15:48, 14 February 2007 (EST)
